This Labour Day weekend (Saturday, August 31 to Monday, August 2nd) experience Taiwanfest in Downtown Vancouver. Taiwanfest is a celebration of Taiwanese culture featuring performances, lectures, a kids’ zone, and of course, plenty of delicious Taiwanese food.
This year’s theme, “Riding the Waves with Vietnam” is a continuation of the Dialogues with Asia series, and shines a spotlight on the relationship between Vietnam and Taiwan. Last years’ festival theme was “Fête with the Philippines,” and featured jeepney rides and a ukulele workshop led by Juno nominee, Ginalina. In honour of the Philippines, a virtual reality tour of an exhibit in Tawan’s National Palace Museum showcased the culture of indigenous Taiwanese people, a professional pan-Asian cooking competition, and an exploration of sustainable farming practices that were being implemented by Taiwanese farmers.
The grounds of the festival span from the corner of Dunsmuir and Granville through Robson at the Southwest corner of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Maps and schedules can be found in the event app which includes a chance to win a round trip to Taipei for visiting sites at the festival.
